New Douglaston Public Library
2021
Redefining community engagement.
Winston Alford-Hamburg worked with George Schieferdecker at BKSK Architects on the New Douglaston-Little Neck Public Library, an innovative replacement for the original 1937 library. The new building is designed with community engagement, accessibility, and sustainability at its core. An important aspect of this project was navigating the PDC review process to ensure that the design aligned with the library's operational and programming needs while responding to the growing demands of the local community.
A modern design for a growing community.
The design blends contemporary aesthetics with functionality, incorporating light-filled spaces, community rooms, and modern resources. The building's form follows the natural slope of the site, creating a dynamic visual presence. Large windows invite natural light into public areas, while sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems are integrated to meet New York City’s environmental standards.
A hub for learning and growth.
A cornerstone of community learning.
The project features multi-purpose spaces for educational programs, community gatherings, and children's activities, making the library a key civic anchor in the neighborhood. The design emphasizes openness and transparency, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages interaction. Outdoor spaces, including a garden and reading areas, enhance the overall experience, offering tranquil spots for reflection and connection with nature.
