Islesboro
2024
A reimagining of coastal Maine living.
Nestled on the rugged cliffs of Islesboro, Maine, these five coastal homes draw inspiration from the state’s architectural heritage while embracing contemporary design. Designed by Winston Alford-Hamburg and George Schieferdecker, each structure harmonizes with the landscape, balancing simplicity and natural elegance. The use of local stone, weathered wood, and expansive glass ensures that the homes feel connected to the earth, while also offering panoramic views of the Atlantic. The design honors Maine’s tradition of gabled roofs and understated materials, drawing a direct line between past and present.
Materials that reflect the landscape.
These homes were designed to blend effortlessly with the cliffs they stand upon, offering a serene retreat while maximizing views and access to the coast. The weathered wooden exteriors and stone-clad walls reflect the timeless beauty of Maine’s coastal barns and sea cottages, while inside, open floor plans invite light and air to circulate. The materials used—both inside and out—were selected for their natural beauty and durability, allowing the homes to age gracefully over time, much like the historic structures of the island.
Bringing people together in nature.
These homes aren't just places to live—they are designed to bring people together. With expansive open spaces that seamlessly flow from indoors to out, they create opportunities for connection: among family, with guests, and with the surrounding natural beauty. The shared outdoor spaces, overlooking the rugged coastline, create a natural gathering point, ideal for evenings spent with loved ones around a firepit or simply enjoying the sound of the waves crashing below.
Built for Maine’s rugged beauty.
A history of Islesboro.
Every detail in these homes, from the gabled roofs to the stone pathways leading down to the ocean, was thoughtfully designed to reflect Maine’s architectural language while offering modern comforts. Large windows frame stunning views of the sea, while also bringing in ample light—creating a tranquil, airy atmosphere within. While working through the schematic design phase, the collaboration between Winston Alford-Hamburg and George Schieferdecker ensured that the vision remained grounded in simplicity, beauty, and functionality.
