Egg, pill, stuff.

Improbable posture.

Inspired by abstract expressionist David Smith’s final masterpiece, Cubi XIX (1964), Egg, Pill, Stuff draws from the vision of Smith’s iconic Cubi series. This collection, influenced by Cubism, embodies improbable balance—a concept where rigid, cold geometry is countered by fluidity and dynamic posture. In my animation below, I invite you to experience the same feeling through shifting scale and anti-gravitational movements.

David Smith, Cubi XIX (1964)

Our minds instinctively try to assign scale to objects. We seek to understand our surroundings by measuring and comparing. But when scale is intentionally ambiguous, it disrupts the mundane and elevates our awareness. This is where art transcends into architecture—when it resists the obvious and opens new dimensions of thought.

Unfixed.

In Egg, Pill, Stuff, I limited myself to just four objects—an egg, a disk, a bar, and a pill—and a single checkerboard pattern. By controlling only the scale, texture, and rotation of these objects, I create a dynamic optical illusion. As you watch, you’ll question whether objects are growing, shrinking, or shifting positions.
